Today we have our very first post by Abby, the newest member of our ELS Sydney team.  If you have not met her, Abby is the smiling face that greets you every day at ELS Sydney.  She has experienced life as an international student and only recently moved to Sydney herself so she has a lot in common with our ELS students. She will be writing for us weekly.  I hope you enjoy her posts.

The Big Issue Street Football Festival kicks off tomorrow, Friday 18 January 2013. Over 11 days, 300 football (or ‘soccer’ in Australia) matches will be played on a floating field on the waters of Darling Harbour in Sydney. Each year the event attracts 140,000 spectators. The event is held to celebrate diversity and aims to bring the community together through football.

From time to time you may be required to find a Justice of the Peace (JP) to sign an important document for you. They perform the following duties:

• administer oath declarations or affidavits
• take statutory declarations and affirmations principally under the Oaths Act 1900
• witness signatures
• attest and certify documents

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings amazed guests last Saturday night. It was a fantastic night of music and dancing and the crowd was absolutely wonderful – such a great vibe.

Experience this again at the next two free Domain events. One is this weekend and the other is on Australia Day.

Flickerfest Short Film Festival is back at Bondi for another year of bite-sized cinema goodness. Now that Summer is well and truly here you can enjoy your short films at Bondi Beach under the stars at Sydney’s first beachside cinema.

Sydney has quite a few underground warehouse parties and gigs organised by fellow party-goers who are not really interested in the popular venues everyone knows about. These gigs/events are generally frequented by easy-going people who just want to have a good time (no trouble makers).

2013 is here and so is the Sydney Festival! 5 January until 27 January 2013, the Sydney Festival is a feast of music, theatre, art and dance.
